Unity of Form | Variety of Perspective

Form Logic

3D Printed Scale Model
Unity of form and variety of perspective were the main concepts that drove the design and form making of this stool. The stool is meant to activate change and foster agency in a space depending upon the user's preference for how it is positioned. No matter how the stool is positioned, it appears as though it is defying gravity and should not be able to support someone taking a seat.
The pieces were formed and joined to complete the base so that the long grain of the wood flows through the entirety of the stool. Ergonomic and comfort design solutions were considered and applied in a way that makes the stool a comfort able seat but also makes it an experience where the user is made to sit in certain positions so they do not tip the stool over while taking a seat.
The form of the stool is quite complex, however, the fabrication methods were not nearly as mind bending as the form may seem. The stool was constructed of 36 laminated pieces of white oak and walnut hardwood. All of the pieces, once laminated, were combined to make the 12 individual members that form the structural base. Each of those members were joined together through the use of a mortise and tenon joinery, specifically wooden dominos joined into corresponding pre drilled holes. All of the wood working to form each of the pieces of wood was done through the combined use of the table saw, jointer, planer, and Festool domino joiner.
